Have you experienced an epiphany? It was the result of you thinking hard, pondering and processing information you had for a while but suddenly some new information gave you a unique perspective that resulted in a new insight and clear vision.
Intellectual wellness may be defined as regularly engaging in activities such as gaining new knowledge, developing a skill, learning something new, expressing your creativity, doing problem solving activities and exploring new ideas that keep you mentally active, well informed and help you increase your potential to lead a successful life.
Stimulating your brain is one way to keep it healthy. We are constantly looking to entertain ourselves especially in our leisure time. Most of the time, it is watching a series on TV that hardly stimulates our brain while reading a book or solving a puzzle actively stimulates our brains because we are more focussed. We need to strike a balance between both types of activities.
The best way to increase your intellectual wellness is to challenge yourself to do something that throws you out of your comfort zone such as learning a foreign language, playing the guitar if you haven’t done so in a long time or going to an art exhibition and finding the unobvious perspective in the exhibits. Another way is to think critically, an improved way of thinking logically without bias, about a topic or issue.
There are a number of activities you can do big and small, to keep your mind active. Studies have revealed that people enjoy experiences more than possessions and recommend spending time and money on experiences. Try and write about a new experience you had, what new ideas came to your mind during this experience and what you learnt from it. Play a board game with your friends or simply solve the sudoku in this morning’s newspaper. The key is to nurture your brain with inspirations and motivations to do more and learn more.
