Wellness

There are several types of heartbreaks – the most common are the ones when you are madly in love and your relationship ends for some reason. Heartbreaks could also be due to a death in the family as it is a loss that can never be filled. There can also be business heartbreaks when things at your entrepreneurial venture don’t turn out as desired or envisaged by you. There are work heartbreaks too – you getting passed for a promotion or being moved to a role you don’t enjoy. Then there are family heartbreaks of siblings or children moving to another city or country.

All of these have one thing in common – a person’s expectations are not met. So how do we deal with heartbreaks?

First of all, it helps to know that this was a situation or case beyond your control. There will be a brief period when you won’t understand what to and how to do anything.

Heartbreaks wreck your emotional wellbeing as they affect your trust, love or confidence and you could be going through the same stages as grieving. As a result, this is the time that you will have to make a conscious effort to distract yourself from negative thoughts, have a routine and not forget self-care.

You could try journaling to express your feelings or talk to someone close to you. It is key to give yourself credit for doing your best within the circumstances. Following this, you must mentally acknowledge that it will take time to cope with the change. Give yourself some time and be compassionate to yourself during this time. Remember you are not alone, there are several folks who are going through or have gone through a heartbreak similar to yours. If you feel it is something you can’t handle alone, you can seek professional help.

Every set back will teach you something and make you more resilient. Analyse your expectations and try to be realistic. Read inspiring books, learn something new like a foreign language, a new musical instrument, sport or dance form. Spend time with cheerful people who can motivate you.

Slowly the vacuum created by the heartbreak will get filled with new opportunities, people, happenings or circumstances that will change your situation. Then you will have a chance to move on to do the next best thing in a few weeks or months.
